Legal Achievements and New Rights For Dental Hygienists
Posted October 16, 2023
Dental hygienists play an irreplaceable and vital role in dental practices, serving as the backbone of oral healthcare. With their exceptional expertise and extensive knowledge in the field of dental care, dental hygienists make a monumental impact on patients’ oral health, helping them improve their overall well-being and sometimes, even saving their lives. As a RDH, I’m thrilled to see our profession receive long-overdue legal recognition as medical professionals, marked by more supportive legislation leading the way for expanded career opportunities.
Infiltration-Style Injection Administration
Have you heard?! Texas recently signed legislation allowing hygienists the right to administer infiltration-style injections. This is a huge step forward for our profession. We eagerly await the dental board rules surrounding this privilege, which will further solidify our role in providing comprehensive dental care.
Anesthesia Certification
In addition, Mississippi and Georgia boards of dentistry have finalized their rules, granting hygienists in those states the opportunity to start their training for anesthesia certification. This is a significant achievement and a testament to the hard work and dedication of dental hygienists all over the country.
Hopefully, it won’t be long before Delaware makes this a nationwide skill set for all hygienists.
License Compacts
License compacts between several states are making it easier for hygienists to relocate and practice in different areas.
Iowa, Washington, and Tennessee became the first three states to have enacted this process into the legislative system. Also considering this change are Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. If enacted, moving to a new location will be a lot easier, opening up even more opportunities to pursue new career goals. This means that if you are a dental hygienist licensed in one of these states, you can transfer your license to another participating state without the hassle of additional exams or paperwork.
Botox Administration
Lastly, let’s not forget the recognition we are receiving for our knowledge and skills. Many states, including Arizona, are now acknowledging that our education in local anesthesia administration can also transfer to the administration of Botox. This is a testament to the expertise and versatility of dental hygienists and demonstrates the value we bring to the field of dentistry.
Phew, there is so much happening in the world of dental hygiene, and it’s definitely cause for celebration! Let’s break out the cupcakes and toast our accomplishments, both big and small. Together, we are making a difference and shaping the future of our profession.
