Transitioning from college life’s familiar comfort to the challenging quest for a new career can be a nerve-racking experience. You’re probably familiar with the saying, ‘Experience is the best teacher.’ Despite all the time spent studying, preparing, and gathering courage, an air of uncertainty can weigh heavily as you prepare to delve into the dental field.

But fear not! One of the joys of being part of our DentalPost community is the mutual readiness to help each other succeed and thrive in the dental profession. We sought out the wisdom of our community members to share with recent dental school graduates, and the nuggets of advice they shared were nothing short of inspiring, uplifting, and encouraging!

Nuggets of Wisdom for Recent Dental Graduates:

Openness to Opportunities

“Be open to each opportunity that comes knocking. You need not accept them all, but don’t shut them out either. You never know where the open doors might lead. And if you don’t land your dream job, or any job at all immediately, don’t feel disheartened. Accumulate as much experience as you can, and eventually, you’ll reach your destination. Patience is key!” –LaKisha Blackley

Networking and Professional Engagement

“Become an active member of your professional association. It’s a fantastic way to network and stay abreast of the latest trends, technologies, and community outreach initiatives.” –Alison Doruff-Stahl

Determination and Focus

“Stay focused and determined!” – Kristy Dee

Career vs Job and Ethical Practice

“Jobs might be easy to land, but building a career requires effort! You’ve toiled hard to reach where you are, and with continued dedication, your career as a hygienist will bloom. Once you find an office that suits you and vice versa, stick with it. Jobs are easy to find, careers demand hard work! Don’t chase money, chase your ethics and happiness!” –Vanessa Justin Jones

Practicing the Golden Rule

“Practice the golden rule! Be the energetic and reliable hygienist that patients (and coworkers) look forward to meeting.” –Symone Kirsch

Welcoming Constructive Criticism

“Don’t shy away from constructive criticism even after graduating; it can guide your growth into a better dental provider.” –Kate Shieldsy

One Day at a Time and Respect for All

“Take it one day at a time! Treat all patients with kindness and respect, regardless of the circumstances. Your education will gradually gel with your real-world experience.” –Nena Casillas

Learning from Mentors

“Don’t fear your boss (dentist). Engage in conversation and learn from them. They have a wealth of knowledge to share if you’re open to receiving it. Acknowledge your novice status, and let them shape you into the fantastic hygienist you have the potential to be!” –Brittany Farmer Langford

Passion and Excellence in Your Work

“Love your work, and work on what you love. Make every mouth your masterpiece: deliver your best work.” –Ethel Hagans

Networking

“Network!” –Samantha Wagner

Personal Connections and Practical Approach

“Connect with your patients on a personal level; treat every patient as you would your family. Be genuine and practical, and good things will follow!” –Roslynn Richard Sieta

Utilizing Online Resources

“Create your online profile and take our assessments on DentalPost.” – The DentalPost Team
