Course Description:
Human trafficking is a hidden crime that affects millions of people worldwide, including right here in our communities. After participating in a mission trip in 2019, where part of my mission was spent working with human trafficking survivors in the DR, I learned that the prevalence of this was also rampant in my own country. It has since become a mission to bring awareness and participate in advocacy to do my part to help stop human trafficking within the United States. As healthcare professionals, we are uniquely positioned to help identify victims and provide intervention. In this course, we will explore the harsh realities of human trafficking, identifying the indicators that could be overlooked in a medical environment.
To better understand the dental setting, case studies have been created to help healthcare professionals develop foundational skills to identify potential victims better and provide a trauma-informed response. What many are not aware of is that a devastating 87.8% of sex trafficking survivors have had contact with health providers during their exploitation, including the dental setting. This only further emphasizes the urgent need for awareness in the clinical setting throughout healthcare. This course aims to equip dental healthcare professionals with the foundational tools and knowledge to help support our vulnerable patients, providing proper steps we can take in intervening.
Participants will gain insight into the different forms of human trafficking, the psychological and physical impact on victims, and the practical steps healthcare providers can take to intervene.
Expect to transform your knowledge from traditional dental roles to becoming a healthcare advocate equipped to become a lifeline for those within human trafficking.
