Description

Patient preparation: Greeting patients, reviewing medical history, seating them in the dental chair, and ensuring their comfort. Treatment room setup: Preparing the treatment area by setting out sterilized instruments, materials, and dental trays according to the procedure. Chairside assistance: Passing instruments to the dentist during procedures, suctioning oral fluids, and maintaining clear visibility of the treatment area. Radiography: Taking and developing dental X-rays as directed by the dentist. Sterilization: Cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing dental instruments and equipment following established protocols. Record keeping: Charting patient treatment details, updating medical records, and maintaining patient files. Patient education: Providing post-treatment instructions on oral hygiene practices like brushing and flossing. Administrative tasks: Scheduling appointments, managing patient flow, and handling insurance billing inquiries. Required skills and qualifications: Completion of a certified dental assisting program Knowledge of dental terminology, instruments, and materials Proficiency in taking and developing X-rays Excellent hand-eye coordination and dexterity Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients Attention to detail and ability to follow infection control procedures Depending on state regulations and practice needs, dental assistants may also perform expanded functions such as: Taking preliminary impressions, Applying topical fluoride, Placing temporary fillings, and Performing basic lab procedures.
