POSITION SUMMARY: The Chief Dental Officer (CDO) is a key leadership role within the health center, responsible for overseeing all dental services and ensuring the provision of high-quality, patient-centered care to underserved populations. The CDO will lead, mentor, and manage the dental team, drive the strategic direction of the dental department, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards specific to Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). The CDO will also collaborate with other clinical leadership to enhance integrated care models, improve patient outcomes, and expand access to dental care in the community. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: • Provides strategic leadership and direction for the dental department, including policy and program development, implementation, and evaluation. • Oversees day-to-day operations of the dental department, ensuring efficient, effective, and high-quality service delivery. • Monitors patient outcomes, satisfaction, and quality metrics, using data to drive improvements in service delivery and patient care. • Recruits, trains, and supervises dental staff to ensure a well-qualified, motivated, and effective team. • Fosters a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and excellence in patient care. • Develops and implements strategies for community outreach to improve access to dental care, especially for underserved and vulnerable populations. • Ensures proper maintenance of all dental records. • Collaborates with the finance team to manage billing, coding, and reimbursement processes, maximizing revenue while maintaining compliance with all regulations. • Prepares periodic reports as required by UDS. • Attends meetings, seminars and conferences as are deemed pertinent to the position. • Ensures promotion of dental care education to the community through direct patient care, policy enforcement, and any group, community, and educational opportunities that may arise. • Performs other duties as assigned by the CEO. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: • DDS or DMD from an accredited dental school. • Licensed to practice dentistry in New York State. EXPERIENCE / TRAINING: • Minimum of 7 years of experience in dental practice, including at least five (5) years in a leadership or management role. • Experience working in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) or with underserved populations is highly preferred. • Knowledge of dental care policies, Medicaid/Medicare regulations, and FQHC-specific requirements. REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES • Strong leadership and team management abilities. • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. • In-depth knowledge of current dental procedures, technologies, and best practices. • Ability to manage budgets, understand financial reports, and control costs. • Commitment to patient-centered care and promoting oral health within underserved communities. • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and dental practice management software. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Dentists, Hygienists, Dental Office Manager, Manager of Dental Outreach TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: Occasional travel to other HHC sites and for required meetings and trainings. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to remain on their feet for long hours. The employee may be required to lift and or move up to 25lbs. The employee must have good vision and can work up close and adjust focus when necessary.
